Olivia Benson is a character from the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, also appearing on Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and is portrayed by Mariska Hargitay. She was a detective, and now Captain, of the Special Victims Unit (SVU) of the NYPD.

Olivia has been with the SVU longer than others who serve in this unit. She is a crusader for justice for the many victims she has met over the years and does not give up.

Olivia is herself the product of a rape, and had to deal with the aftermath of this with her mother for years. She eventually learns the identity of her father and learns she has a brother.

Olivia is a strong and compassionate character and always brings her experience and knowledge to the cases she works. She cares about the victim and works to protect them while helping them find closure.
